Muratore: I Worked too Hard to Give Voters the Final Word!

By Emerson Drake
7/6/10

That’s what we heard from Joe Muratore Tuesday night at the City Council meeting. Muratore with his voice breaking with emotion said I knocked on too many doors and spent too much money not to be elected regardless of what percentage I received.

Dave Lopez said he appreciated the need for a 50% plus one majority especially since he was involved in several runoffs and only won in the last one.Marsh started the discussion stating he would not support any motion that eliminated runoffs.

Dave Geer was willing to go along with Olsen, Muratore, and Ridenour and support the committee’s recommendation to eliminate the need for a 50 plus one percent majority.

Democracy in Modesto is as good as gone.Once again, the evil dark side has won.The question always arises as to why citizens don't get more involved in politics here in Modesto and tonight was another fine example.

Three councilmen spoke out in favor of the importance of allowing the voters their say, and four said we'll tell them what to do and they'll like it.If we were to have five people running in a district council race as little as 300 votes could elect a council representative.

Is that what we want?

Don't we deserve to have at least a simple majority of 50 plus 1 percent vote for a winner?

Muratore, Ridenour Geer, and Olsen don't think so.

What about you?
