Word around Town

6/20/11

Good afternoon. I hope you all had an opportunity to read Nan Austin’s story on the budget woe’s of the Modesto City Schools. You will read that your school administrators and Directors are incapable of making wise budget decisions. You would have read that the District plans to spend $256 MILLION DOLLARS in the 2011-12 school year. BUT, you will also read that in the 2012-13 year, the District will “...run out of money.”

The District web page says that there are 32,000 students in the system. I think that is about 4,000 more than actually attend school, but do the math.

$256,000,000 divided by 32,000 students = $8,000. Exactly 8 THOUSAND DOLLARS PER STUDENT!!!!

That means that a class room with 25 students costs us $200,000. HOW CAN THAT BE? Where is the money REALLY going? And what do these financial wizards plan to do for the next year?

There is an election coming up with 3 Directors up for re-election. They are Spina, Grenbeaux and Lopez. I trust that you all will find candidates who actually live in this universe who will take over those 3 seats and get this school board thinking correctly.

Thank you, Dave
