The 'Good Ole Days, The Remembrances of a Modesto Police Officer

By Emerson Drake

The following information was obtained through a legal request for discovery The Office of the District Attorney refused to release the information.

A Superior Court Judge ordered that the information be released and tonight I am bringing the information to this council on behalf of the Sabatino Report and the Voice of Modesto.

The good o’l days I remember included beating anyone who ran from us. It was the “unwritten rule” the veterans taught us new guys.

The bad guys knew it as well as we did. If we chased you, it was coming. No use of force, no nothing. You were pummeled, taken to Scenic Hospital, put to the front of the line, patched up and booked. The biggest “B&R” event was Graffiti Night. Everyone removed their name tags (Except for me. From 1986 thru 1991, I wore Joe Aja’s name tag until he caught me and ripped it off my chest.

I always wondered how many complaints he got). Anyway, through the night we “beat and released” quite a few people. You’d start hitting, they’d start running and eventually they’d escape into the crowd. SWAT had their own “Strike Squad.” They’d rush to a fight, 4 deep in an unmarked.

They’d pour out and start clubbing people with their bokens until everyone ran away. Then it was on to the next fight. It’s been a good run. I’ve had many ups and downs, but they got me where I am now: A happy, healthy, (at least physically), MPD veteran who has a couple of books worth of stories and a ton of friends.
